What is the deal with Mondays?  Anybody else have an awkward relationship with Mondays?  I know I did until I got onto what was going on for me in my mind in my thinking.

Mondays do not make us feel bad, did you realize that? Mondays do not have any power.  But your  thoughts about Monday do have power.   If Monday is just another day of the week then why does it feel so different than let’s say Friday or any given Tuesday?

Because your thoughts about Monday suck…….

Mondays do not make us feel bad, did you realize that? Mondays do not have any power.  But your  thoughts about Monday do have power.   If Monday is just another day of the week then why does it feel so different than let’s say Friday or any given Tuesday?  

Because of the way that you’re thinking about Monday.

Just take a minute to ponder.  What is your relationship with Monday?  How do you talk about your upcoming Monday? How do you feel on most Mondays?  This relationship matters.  This day that starts your week, how do you want to feel about your Mondays? 

When I was a new business owner as a new coach, I didn’t realize how I was treating Monday or myself on those days.  All I knew was that by 5 pm, I was stressed out and disappointed by how the day had gone. All I wanted was a sweaty work out or a big glass of wine to feel better. . I knew that my Monday’s were stressing me out. They were pretty awful. They weren’t working as a strong start to my week.

Even as a coach I didn’t know what to do about it at the time, it was so subtle.  It’s such a cultural norm to hate Mondays.  It wasn’t until I started taking responsibility for how I was showing up in my business, that I realized I had to do something about those thoughts.

There is only one way to make a better Monday.  

You up for it?  Are you ready to have some more powerful and productive Mondays?

Admit where you are, so you can go where you want to go.

Take stock of all your thoughts about Monday.  You can do this in your head but I highly recommend pulling out a slip of paper and brain dumping every thought you have about Monday. 

I had thoughts like:

Monday’s are stressful.  

I won’t plan a lot on Monday, that will feel better

Monday’s should be very productive.

If I don’t start strong on Monday’s I’ll have a horrible week.

None of these thoughts created a productive start to my week.  These thoughts were sabotaging my growth and my enjoyment of my work.   

What are you believing about Mondays, that isn’t serving you? That you need to let go of?

Funny thing about thought work here, If I think Mondays are Stressful, I’m doing 2 things.  I am creating a feeling of stress in my body, every time that thought runs across my mind.  And when my body feels that wave of stress, no matter how small or unintentional, I pull back, I have a hard time concentrating….and yes most of the day is stressful.  

Also, our minds, when they believe a thought, will collect more evidence.  I was wiring my brain to look for more stress, more evidence that my Mondays were a hot mess.  

Now listen, even as a coach, I didn’t realize what was going on in the background.  We’ve created a lifetime of thoughts around productivity, work and Monday!  

I tried everything…….but taking action here doesn’t work unless it comes from a clean and better thought.  But believe me I tried and I know you have.  Before you try a better plan on your calendar for Mondays, take stock of your thinking.  It will help that calendar plan, or ‘to do’ list for Monday work so much better.  

I’ll tell you what I tried before I got onto what a jerk I was being to myself (should be productive!) I decided that I would start my day slow and then do yoga every Monday at 9:30 for over an hour.  Then I’d just glide right into my day and be really productive. 

I love Yoga, but it did NOT work!!!!!  

All morning I was literally fighting myself on the yoga mat with stressful thoughts because of my “Monday’s are so stressful story” “You should be getting a lot done”  Seriously, I would get home from yoga starved, eat quickly, run through the shower AND finally get to work at 1 with an 8 hour To Do list in front of me.  

I’d get to it and start working through my list but by 5 I was so mad at myself for what I HADN’T DONE that I was just over it!!!**(8 hours of work in 5)  I’d go work it off with a sweaty workout and my Tuesdays would be better but only because my thoughts were more neutral on Tuesdays, ha. 

These thoughts created Stress and Judgment, not productivity and great motivation. 

Something had to change. 

I had to do 2 things to turn around my Monday’s, and this is available to you right now.  I had to admit what I was believing and stop being so judgemental around my productivity. I stopped giving myself permission to beat myself up, no matter what happened on Mondays.    I also got curious about my thinking and just the awareness helped me to just get more neutral so I could simply get my top 3 things done on Monday. 

I love my turnaround story around Mondays.  My brain still likes to pipe up everyone once in a while and tell me an ugly story about Mondays but my Mondays are just like any Tuesday and even some days they are like any Fun Friday.  

How do you get there?

Simply admit your current thoughts about Monday.  When we write them down we can get curious and stop thinking them but start evaluating these thoughts.  Are your thoughts serving you?  If not let them go.

Trust me here, awareness can be all we need.    

This step is gold, this neutralizes the thoughts that aren’t working. Don’t worry about turning that thought around right away.  Just stay in curiosity with all of the thoughts you’re seeing. 

Then…..

Decide how you want to feel on Monday.  Name an emotion. Sometimes just calm and centered is all we need to strive for.

What thoughts would you have to start thinking more often, believing more often to feel that way on Monday.  

Write these down if you have to.  These aren’t mantras to make you feel better.  These are new thoughts that you can practice until you truly believe them.  

This is the fine art of rewiring your brain.
