I want to talk today about creating more enjoyment in the work that you’re doing. AND when we spend more time loving what we do…….we grow, in confidence as business owners and in revenue. Seriously, none of us started a business because we didn’t like the work that we bring into the world. Whether it is Law, Accounting, bookkeeping, real estate, travel, Your particular expertise. You brought your business to life because you love the work that you do and you’re good at it.
Last Spring, when CoVid hit us, I sprung into action on a topic that has become near and dear to my heart, protecting your Zone of Genius NO MATTER WHAT. I gave 3 rounds of workshops on the topic. There is nothing better than seeing people claim their Zone of Genius and learn to live there
Zone of Genius, I do mean your expertise but even more than that, that place where you combine your expertise with what you are personally really good at. The realtor that is uber experienced and her genius is helping all parties to stay calm during all phases of the real estate transaction. The woman who is a travel agent who not only is a great service provider for clients but KNOWS she can support and help other agents, she’s a genius at seeing their needs ahead of time. The attorney that LOVES estate work. Loves working with families and individuals during and preparing for a time in life ALL of us want to avoid.
For me it was staying on the pulse of what business owners needed and providing gathering opportunities through workshops and coach calls so that everyone would feel connected, encouraged and confident by doing the thought work.
Do you see it, are you aware of the special uniqueness you bring into your expertise through your business. It is why people hire you. There are many that practice our craft, but there is only one you.
Protecting your Zone of Genius is EVERYTHING. When we protect it, create more time to spend in it, we create timelessness, our confidence grows, we inspire, we create solutions quickly. THIS is the key to a thriving business, this is the key to personal enjoyment from our work. It must be protected at all costs.
So………most of us really know when we’re in our Zone of Genius, again it’s when work doesn’t feel like work, it’s timeless, your energy is powerful, it’s creative, its insightful, it’s not just great it’s genius.
There are a few steps that I have found that really work in protecting this zone and truly LEVERAGING this zone. This is your unique strength, use it often.
- Create awareness of when you’re in your zone. When do you feel most alive in the ‘doing’ of your business? When do you LOVE your work?
- Where, in the serving of clients and potential clients can you be doing MORE of this.
- Is your business at a growth point where this unique Zone Time is getting rushed or is being taken for granted?
- Do you need more support for day to day tasks so you can invest/slow down and be in this zone?
For example, as a coach, this can apply to all expert advisors. When I’m speaking and coaching a group in real time, I’m in my Zone. I love the experience, but more importantly it serves the audience. So, when I create these opportunities and when asked to speak I design these engagements in a format I know works for me.
What is THE best way for you to be in your zone communicating to a new audience: speaking, teaching, simplifying a complicated concept, encouraging the group to take action……lean into YOUR Zone. Even in personal conversations and networking this can be helpful, I ask open ended coaching questions when I meet new people. Networking is so much more fun and new connections get a taste of what I’m about.
As an expert advisor, are you spending the BULK of your time in this zone? Are you getting the support you need so that your clients get the benefit of Your zone in the work you’re doing with them? As you show up with others, are you ‘dropping in to your zone’ your uniqueness so that they can see you fully, authentically.
What is so fascinating is this: When we are doing work in that space where it feels enjoyable, timeless and satisfying, it NOT only serves us. It is that space where we are serving others best as well. It’s such great news.
Protect it. Rest up for it. Most of all dig in and enjoy it, it’s one of the best fuels for your future business and creates that “I love my job feeling” that we all crave when we’re working so hard.
