Honoring what you want is REALLY important. And this may be one of the absolute keys to regret proofing your business and life.
One thing that I see on the other side of the curtain in coaching business owners is this………as you take on the responsibility of running a business as an owner, as a CEO as an expert advisor opening their practice, suddenly EVERYTHING comes 2nd to the priorities of the business.
Suddenly, nothing else matters. Your needs and desires for what you want in life ends up waiting at the back of the line. This is a soul buster. This is when you can begin to resent that amazing business you created or resent the demands on us from family. We begin to adopt a mindset that all work and no play is the only way to go and nothing could be further from the truth. NOTHING
Also, I believe this is what robs the business of 2 things: a fully vibrant visionary leader for the business and a human that is enjoying their full and amazing life. It can really steal your joy.
This is actually quite simple. Our brain is so used to thinking ALL or NOTHING that it has convinced you that you don’t have time or you CAN’T do what you most want to do.
What if it was as simple as giving yourself permission to want what you want and get creative about implementing it? This goes for creative business ideas as well as ways you’d like to spend your time off of work invest any activity that is not part of yoru business.
How do you know it’s time? You’re becoming resentful of what your business is demanding of you and want some relief. AND you’re feeling guilty about how much time or energy you’re spending away from your family.
Let these be indicators of a time to make a shift, not an opportunity to beat yourself up about it. That isn’t useful and you know how I feel about judging yourself, we need to take that activity OFF of the table. It doesn’t do anybody any good. When we get hard on ourselves about how much time we’re missing with our families it actually makes us give up and retreat more.
Giving yourself permission
To develop this muscle I have 2 recommendations.
If you love journaling (even if you don’t)
Give yourself 30 minutes at least 3 times a week to write about what you want and what is on your mind. Let it flow. We have so many routine thoughts that live at the surface, that sometimes we need to give ourselves more time to dig in. See what’s there.
This process is healing, calming and I bet you’ll be surprised at the ideas that come and the clarity.
Another suggestion, especially if you said NO WAY I hate journaling
Is to get a very pretty but small journal. If you don’t have one Moleskins have all sizes and colors. Make this fun and invest some time in a daily practice.
What do I want?
5 minutes Daily until you train your brain to share with you What you Want you really really want.
Write at least 3 things down.
I want to take Friday’s off
I want to double my revenue this year
I want to learn how to speak French
Practice giving yourself permission to write it down
