Good Morning powerful Mindset Business Owners!!
While I was recording last week’s podcast, I realized I wanted to spend a little bit more time explaining how I apply a growth mindset to my life and business. This is the how of moving from an employee mindset (remember mindset is merely a set of thoughts) to owner mindset. This is also where the nitty gritty process lies in moving from scarcity, fear, safety, being bored into a set of thoughts and emotions that are much more motivating.
So many people ask me how I get motivated, encouraged, even in the middle of this long reaching pandemic. THIS is how. You and I both have an opportunity to believe what we want about our future. Sometimes I need to be aware and notice current patterns before moving forward. But many times I just have to make a decision to believe what serves me around my business and my life.
You and I can believe whatever we want. There are no thought police, no rules about what you can believe. Don’t be realistic, it’s not helpful. This is where the fun begins in thought management.
What is really clear to me is that when we are in Employee mindset, waiting for direction from others, thinking that our work days are happening to us, we are not in a growth mindset. Growth mindset as it relates to personal growth AND business growth is very much not in response to our circumstances but stepping in and creating, deciding and moving forward in a powerful Vision. One of possibility and creating something you have never created before.
Why do we need to learn this because …………..of our brain. Yes our Brain loves KNOWING what’s ahead, cringes at the unknown and if you are up to handling more clients than you ever have, doing work you have never done before or starting a new business, your brain just might be freaking out. And mine, even when I’m having THE most epic days business wise, likes to speak up and complain, trigger fear at the weirdest moments. So welcome to the party. This is the human experience, especially when you are honoring what you want more of in your life.
I have a simple process that I have been using that has just fired up my motivation and has helped me to courageously step into believing GREAT things about my future and taking ACTION on them. And you can use this process to turn the least inspiring, fear filled moments into ones of possibility. This is not a one time process during goal setting per se, this is a continual process to help me stay on course taking action towards those goals.
I am not a mantra person, not against it. Don’t mind a great quote now and again to remind me of something powerful. But I have developed a practice where I notice sentences that just fire me up. It’s more powerful than mantras because they are MY statements, my statements of belief around my own work that come from my mind, and my personal experience. I encourage you to notice and create your own.
This is how you do it.
After you have had an amazing call with a client, after you have just sent the BIGGEST proposal you’ve ever written to a new prospect, after you closed one of the most important engagements you’ve ever worked on, get to your journal(piece of paper) and write down what you’re thinking about yourself right then in that moment. It’s answering the question: What are you insanely proud of? Where are you freakin’ killing it? WRITE IT DOWN.
I actually keep this up close and personal on my calendar. They are very handy when I’m disappointed that something didn’t go the way I thought it would. Very handy when my brain likes to look at what is NOT happening in my business, instead of looking at what is.
THESE statements are your personal belief mantras. They shift and change over time. I usually have a new set of them every month.
Just interrupting the victim like thinking can be enough but I have taken my enjoyment of my work to a new level by reminding myself, more often, what is really true. I’m a powerful coach. I GET my clients and SERVE THEM POWERFULLY. I have created a thriving business.
NOW YOU. Use these prompts to create your own. Create your first set today.
I’m a __________ (your profession) i.e. I’m an insightful attorney. I’m THE calmest realtor, even in the most stressful of moments.
Look for and recognize your uniqueness here, celebrate it.
I’m great at __________
I’m so proud of __________________.
I invest in my team. I know what my clients need. I serve at a high level.
These are great examples. When someone compliments you, do not brush it off. Thank them and remember to write it down. Many times others see us with clarity and we need to honor that. Many times my belief statements come from clients reflecting on our work but they also come in conversations with my own coach.
Lean into the ways that you KNOW you’re making an impact with your clients, your employees ESPECIALLY when the going gets rough.
I have another really great journal prompt that has helped me here. I am a new Peloton rider. I got my bike in December and quickly found and have become a fan of Christine D’ercole. She shared her powerful mantra practice, she even had a webinar on it. I’ve applied these prompts as well.
I am
I can
I will
I do
These are all recognizing the truth I am….. Your potential I can….. Your willingness I will…… and again the truth….. I do…….
I am willing to work hard
I can do more, serve more
I will continue to serve at a high level
I do love what I do.
That was just today. These prompts are SO life giving. I highly recommend it. I have a new set every time I run through them. They are all about knowing that where we are is not a stopping point but a starting point.
Keep this podcast handy my friends. We need to be reminded about what is possible. Stay tuned I’m training my brain to believe in more this year…..and it has meant everything in the enjoyment of growing my business.
And all of this is possible for you, as you dig in and manage what you are believing about yourself.
You’re doing an incredible job, don’t forget it!!
